Judith Geher – First Blush

Toronto portrait painter, Judith Geher holds a Bachelor of Architecture with honours from the University ofToronto. Her practice includes drawing, painting, and sculpture, as well as designing thoughtful and considered architecture. Her work has been exhibited nationally.

Judith Geher’s figurative paintings explore contemporary images of an idealized feminine aesthetic, and are fraught with longing and desire. Working within the parameters of commonly held notions of beauty, she collects images from various fashion magazines and similar internet sites. This vehicle carries her stylistic impressions, thoughts and desires toward these images. This is reinforced with simultaneous thin planes of paint and thick gooey daubs of oil. Hair, flowers and the pupils of the eyes carry broad aggressive brush strokes.  Painted on wood veneer, she allows the texture of the substructure to infiltrate the planes of her faces.
